The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States as well as CCOHS in Canada, sets specific training requirements for Forklift certification to ensure safe operation in the workplace. Here are the key points generally involved in the training process:
- **Forklift Operator Qualifications**: Trainees must receive both classroom instruction and practical training. This includes a demonstration of the operator's ability to safely operate the Forklift
- **Operator Evaluation**: After the classroom training session, operators must be evaluated on their driving skills to ensure they can operate the Forklift safely. This evaluation should include both written and hands on practical testing.
- **Certification**: Once an operator has successfully completed the classroom training and the operator evaluation, demonstrating their skills, they will be certified to operate the Forklift. They will then receive a wallet size certification card.
- **Forklift Renewal and Refresher Training**: Lift Truck operators must be recertified every 3 years, or whenever there is a significant change in workplace conditions, equipment, or if the operator has been observed operating the Forklift unsafely.
- **Record Keeping**: Employers need to keep proper records of all training and evaluations for each certified operator, in case something was to happen or a safety inspector was to show up at your worksite.
- It’s important to consult the specific OSHA & CCOHS guidelines and local regulations on a regular basis, as they may have additional requirements or recommendations.
